At Southern Tool Steel, we provide high-quality D2 Tool Steel, known for its machinability and wear resistance in industrial applications. Whether you're producing high-precision dies or crafting long-lasting components for rigorous applications, our comprehensive stock and professional advice guarantee you acquire the materials you need.

Southern Tool Steel provides D2 tool steel as:

  • Decarb Free*: Rounds, Flats, Squares, & Plate

  • Drill Rods in standard 36” lengths

*Note: Decarb Free is material that has been ground top and bottom and is oversized to finish on the thickness or diameter. (Thickness or diameter oversize approx +.015 to +.030. Thinner material, less than 1 inch, could have more stock on the thickness. Width oversize approx +.030 to +.090, depending on the vendor.)

Key Attributes of D2 Tool Steel

High Carbon Content

D2 tool steel boasts a high carbon content, which contributes to its significant hardness and wear resistance. This composition allows it to maintain sharp edges and shapes, making it highly effective for cutting and forming tools.

Corrosion Resistance

With a high chromium content, D2 tool steel provides excellent corrosion resistance. This attribute is crucial for applications where the material is exposed to harsh environments, enhancing its durability and lifespan.

Wear Resistance

The presence of alloy carbide particles in D2 tool steel results in remarkable wear resistance. These hard particles help resist abrasion and maintain the steel's integrity over long-term use, making it ideal for tools that experience frequent contact and friction.

High Compressive Strength

The robust compressive strength of D2 tool steel allows it to withstand heavy loads and stresses, making it suitable for forming rolls, punches, and other high-stress applications.

Machinability

Despite its high hardness, D2 tool steel is known for its decent machinability compared to other high alloy tool steels. This makes it relatively easier to shape and finish while maintaining its desirable mechanical properties.

These attributes make D2 tool steel a preferred choice for manufacturers and suppliers looking for reliable, high-performing materials suitable for demanding industrial applications.

Typical Applications for D2 Steel:

Due to its deep hardening properties and high compressive strength, D2 tool steel is perfect for tasks that require long production runs and tight tolerances. Common applications include:

  • Blanking Dies

  • Forming Dies

  • Punches

  • Forming Rolls

  • Edging Rolls

  • Master Tools

  • Heading Tools

Heat Treatment for D2 Tool Steel

The heat treatment process involves heating the metal to change its metallurgical structure. For D2 tool steel, the process includes:

  • Forging: 2100-1700°F

  • Annealing: 1600-1650°F

  • Preheating: 1450-1500°F

  • Hardening: 1800-1875°F

  • Tempering: 400-650°F

How Do You Temper D2 Tool Steel?

Tempering D2 tool steel is crucial and should be tailored to the tool's service requirements, typically between 900°-960°F. For best results, double temper the steel with the second tempering 50 degrees lower than the first, held for at least two hours per inch of thickness. Begin tempering immediately after hardening and gradually reach the desired temperature to minimize cracking.

How to Determine Hardness of D2 Tool Steel

Hardness tests, such as Rockwell C and Brinell, assess a metal’s various properties, including wear resistance, toughness, and formability. The Rockwell C scale is used below:
