D2 Tool Steel Supplier

 What is D2 Tool Steel?

D2 tool steel is a high carbon tool steel and high chromium-based grade that features excellent machinability and wear-resistance. This grade has maximum toughness at high hardness in sections of all sizes. In addition, D2 features a high level of resistance to abrasion due to a profusion of extremely hard wear-resisting alloy carbide particles that make up the steel.

Typical Applications for D2 Steel:

  • Blanking Dies
  • Forming Dies
  • Punches
  • Forming Rolls
  • Edging Rolls
  • Master Tools
  • Heading Tools

The deep hardening and high compressive strength of D2 make it ideal for applications that require long runs and close tolerances.

Heat Treatment

This is the process of heating metal to an elevated temperature to obtain change in properties of the metallurgical structure. The heat treatment for D2 is as follows:

Forging

Annealing

Preheating

Hardening

Tempering

2100-1700°F

1600-1650°F

1450-1500°F

1800-1875°F

400-650°F

How Do You Temper D2 Tool Steel?

Tempering of D2 will be dictated greatly by the tool and service requirements—typically in the range of 900°-960°F. It is ideal to double temper D2 steel, ensuring that the second temper is 50 degrees lower than the first. Hold a minimum of two hours for each inch of the greatest cross-section. Temper immediately after hardening and heat slowly to the desired temperature in order to reduce the potential of cracking the steel.

What is the Hardness of D2 Tool Steel?

Hardness tests determine the various properties of a specific metal, which includes its resistance to wear, toughness, and formability. Two widely used tests are Rockwell C and Brinell. Rockwell C is measured in the unit HRC, which is the measurement used below.

Southern Tool Steel Stocks D2 in the Following:

  • Decarb Free*: Rounds, Flats, Squares, & Plate
  • Drill rod in standard 36” length

*Decarb Free is material that has been ground top and bottom and is oversized to finish on the thickness or diameter. (Thickness or diameter oversize approx +.015 to +.030. Thinner material, less than 1 inch, could have more stock on the thickness. Width oversize approx +.030 to +.090, depending on the vendor.)
